Ratings of Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal
The general hotel ratings of Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal Budapest, just like almost all of the luxury five-star hotels in Budapest Hungary, tend to be between 4.5 and 4.7 out of 5: Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal is towards the upper end of these ratings. The luxurious five-star hotel has an excellent reputation, and has gained several prestigious local and international awards: most recently (in March 2007) the Five Star Diamond Award presented by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. A year earlier, in 2006, the luxury hotel was chosen as Best Luxury World Hotel by TripAdvisor in its 2006 Travellers’ Choice awards. Besides the best Hungarian travel industry awards, the hotel was voted as the Leading Hotel of Hungary in November 2005 at the 12th edition of the World Travel Awards held at London’s Royal Opera House, which is considered to be one of the highest accolades for hotels globally. In 2004, the Corinthia Grand Royal Hotel received Europe’s “Best Hotel Architecture Award.” And if it should not be enough, Corinthia Grand Royal Hotel (and formerly, Hotel Royal) has exerted its gravitational force on numerous world-famous & Hungarian celebrities. This was the place where Josephine Baker stayed during her visit to Budapest in 1928, while Bela Bartok conducted several concerts in the ballroom a decade later or so. More recently, Maestro Luciano Pavarotti was also a celebrity guest in Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal during his Farewell Concert in Budapest, in August 2006. Location of Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal Budapest
Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal is located in the center of Budapest on Erzsebet Boulevard (Erzsebet korut). The hotel is central, but not super central like Le Meridien or Kempinski. It means that instead of a 2-minute walk, you may have to walk 15-25 minutes to get to some cultural spots. Like many of the Budapest luxury hotels, it’s only a 30-minute drive by car from Budapest Ferihegy Airport (13 miles/ 20 km). The tram stop is almost at the corner of the hotel, while the metro lines are about 5-10 minutes. The hotel is also very close to the impressive Andrassy Avenue (Opera House, Puppet Theatre, House of Terror museum), the iconic street of citizen Budapest, flanked by sycamore and ash-trees as well as eclectic Neo-Renaissance palaces (some functioning as embassies). In addition, the cosmopolitan Liszt Ferenc ter full of great restaurants, cafes and shops is just a few minute walk from the hotel, just like one of the biggest shopping malls, the Westend City Center (adjacent to the Western Railway Station, the metal-glass poetical work of the Eiffel group). As a Swedish guest points out on TripAdvisor: “If you walk to the west you come to Oktogon square and Andrassy street in five minutes. Andrassy is a very nice street, and just a few metres down from Oktogon you have Liszt Ferenc Ter which is a nice area with good restaurants and bars. The Opera is a bit further down on Andrassy towards the Danube. If you instead walk east from the hotel, it gets dodgier quite soon. Take the Metro at Oktogon, not at Blaha Lutja Ter (many shady characters there). Trams 4 and 6 stop right outside the hotel. Walking down to the Danube takes 15 minutes (Andrassy is the nicest way).”
Rooms in Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal Budapest
There are altogether 414 rooms (inc. 98 suites, and accessible rooms for those with limited mobility), two Ambassador suites and a presidential suite – all nicely decorated – French elegance echoing the general impression of the hotel. You can choose from the Executive (decor in red, gold and green) or Superior (decor in a blue, beige and red colour scheme) style guest rooms. As the executive rooms provide access to the Executive Lounge you may wish to go for the executive option. The rooms reflect the overall fascinating architectural grandeur of the whole building. Some of the guest rooms face the busy street (Erzsebet boulevard), others the atrium, the inner courtyards or the vivid Harsfa Street. Guest rooms are stylish with dark woods and jewel-tone upholstery. The bathrooms are all-Italian, from marble floors to gleaming fixtures. The marble bathrooms are equipped with bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary toiletries, in addition, there are separate bathtubs and showers. Only the Ambassador suites and the Presidential suite have king size beds, the rest go with twin beds or queen sized beds. The rooms themselves on the other hand are really spacious, most contain a seating area and a desk. Executive rooms and upwards are furbished with mahogany. Miscellaneous: satellite TV, safes, phones (with voice mail), hair dryer, air-conditioning, and a trouser press. One of the guests has mentioned that he did not find enough sockets for all his equipment (including his iPod) and there were some problems with the charging too, but he would still come back here. That’s a compliment from a geek I guess.
Pool and fitness in Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal Budapest
Probably one of the best choices for luxury spa travellers. The entry to the hotel’s luxurious Royal Spa is complimentary for hotel guests. The old spa was designed and built in 1886 operating until 1944. The Royal Spa of Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal was almost turned into a car-park, which would have been a great mistake.
Luckily, it re-opened in a fantastically renovated form in July 2006 as a spa coming complete with a swimming pool, top-notch saunas, steam room, 2 Jacuzzis, 8 massage salons, a dry floating bed for deep relaxation, a wide variety of exquisite treatment facilities, Niagara bathtub, mud baths, seaweed baths and tropical showers. Although the spa is free for guests, it is only for adults over 16 years of age. The fitness room has treadmills, free weights, etc.
Dining in Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal Budapest
The dining options of Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal are excellent, catering for all hours and tastes. First, the Brasserie Royale & Terrace restaurant, which is ideal for both business and casual meetings and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. I wouldn’t leave out the Baked Mangalica Pork Tenderloin in Strudel Dough from the menu. (Mangalica pork is a special low-cholesterol pork type, very healthy!) On Sundays, the brasserie hosts family-friendly brunches (not every weekend, please check the schedule with the hotel staff). According to Fodor, “Brasserie Royal’s Sunday “V.I.K.” i.e. Very Important Kids brunch is very popular.” VIK programs go with kids, foods, games, videos and nannies. Next, the Far Eastern Rickshaw Restaurant with a sushi bar: enjoy the Japanese, Thai, and Chinese food for dinner. The house speciality is Rickshaw Cr塾e Brulee – sounds fascinating. The Rickshaw Restaurant and Sushi Bar was awarded Budapest’s “Best East-Asian Restaurant” in 2004. Third, the Bock Bistro: the wine selection is carefully compiled from all wine-making regions of Hungary (more than 500 wines). The menu is Mediterranean, French and Hungarian-inspired (gourmet sandwiches, seafood, rotisseries, etc.). The lobby bar serves drinks & light snacks accompanied with live piano music nightly. The Royal Cafe & Conditorei offers coffees, soft drinks, cake specialities (traditional Hungarian pastry), and delicacies. Szamos marzipan is worth a try if you like marzipan.
